Ruka

Come for the resort. Stay for Kuusamo.

Ruka is a long drive for a single ski day — and a very good reason to make a weekend of it. Come for one of Finland’s major ski resorts, stay for the village, after ski and restaurants, then use the next day for the forests, rapids and snow-loaded landscapes of Kuusamo.

01 / Why Ruka

Big enough to make the drive count.

  1. The resort

This is a proper ski trip.

Ruka is one of Finland’s major ski resorts. There is enough terrain, enough lift infrastructure and enough variation that the skiing itself can justify travelling this far.

  2. The season

Winter tends to start early here.

Ruka is known for a long ski season, which makes it especially useful when conditions elsewhere are still changing at either end of winter.

  3. The village

The day does not end at the last lift.

Restaurants, bars, shops and after ski sit close together around Ruka Village, so once the skis come off you can park the car and let the evening continue on foot.

  4. Kuusamo

The resort is only half the reason.

Forested hills, frozen rapids and national-park landscapes around Kuusamo feel different from the open fells farther north. Give yourself another day and use it.

Our take

If you drive this far, give yourself enough time for both Ruka and Kuusamo.

03 / Start with the resort

Use Ruka like a proper ski destination.

  1. 01Ski the day

    Give the slopes enough time.

Arrive early, ski properly and resist turning the first day into a collection of side trips. Ruka is one of the destinations where the resort itself deserves the day.

    Check slopes & lifts
  2. 02Connect village and valley

Use the gondola, not the car.

The Village–Valley gondola makes it easy to move between the two sides without turning the ski day into a parking exercise.

    See current lift information
  3. 03Let the evening continue

    Stay for after ski.

Once the skis come off, leave the car parked. Ruka has enough restaurants and evening life that the resort day can turn naturally into dinner and drinks.

04 / Then leave Ruka behind

Kuusamo is the reason to stay another day.

  1. 01 / Oulanka + Kiutaköngäs

Go see what moving water looks like in winter.

Oulanka National Park gives the second day a completely different rhythm. Kiutaköngäs is one of the obvious stops: forest, rock and powerful rapids instead of lifts and resort buildings.

    See Oulanka / Kiutaköngäs
  2. 02 / Riisitunturi

Go where the trees carry the snow.

Riisitunturi is one of the most distinctive winter landscapes in the region. When conditions are right, the snow-loaded trees make the forest feel almost sculpted.

    Plan a Riisitunturi visit

05 / Local picks

A few places worth knowing once the skis come off.

  1. For a proper dinner

Make dinner part of the weekend.

Ruka Village has enough restaurant choice that dinner can be part of the trip rather than something fitted around the drive.

  2. For a relaxed resort meal / village stop

    Keep the village stop easy.

Choose somewhere close to the lifts and accommodation when you want a straightforward meal without moving the car again.

  3. For after ski / later evening

Let the evening continue on foot.

Once the skis come off, keep the car parked and let after ski, bars and the walk back to where you are staying shape the rest of the night.

06 / If we had 48 hours in Ruka

Here’s how we’d use them.

Day one belongs to the resort. Arrive early enough to ski properly, use the gondola rather than moving the car and stay in the village when the lifts close.

Eat, have a drink if you feel like it and walk back to where you are staying.

Day two belongs to Kuusamo. Choose one direction rather than collecting pins on a map — Oulanka and Kiutaköngäs, or Riisitunturi when the conditions make it worth the drive.

Stay another night if the schedule allows it.

Ruka makes much more sense as a weekend than as ten hours of driving around one ski day.

07 / Stay two nights

One night gets you there. Two gives you Kuusamo.

From Saariselkä, Ruka is too far away to make the return drive the centre of the trip. Stay close to the village, leave the car parked for the evening and use the next morning for whatever sits beyond the lifts.

Find accommodation in Ruka

If after ski or drinks are part of the evening, the car stays parked until the next day.

08 / Before you go

A longer drive deserves a little preparation.

Driving note: Around 350 km in winter is not the same trip every day. Plan around conditions rather than the fastest map estimate.

09 / Go further

Keep the southern route moving.
