FAQ

Answers for the practical parts of your rental.

Practical answers for the questions that often come up before you send a rental request.

01 / Renting basics

The essentials before you rent.

Who are Kaltio Rent cars for?

Kaltio Rent is designed especially for seasonal workers and longer-stay visitors in the Ivalo-Saariselkä-Inari area. The cars are meant for everyday northern life: commuting to work, grocery trips, airport connections, visiting friends and making the most of days off.

Can I rent a car for less than one month?

Our main focus is monthly and longer-term rentals, because many customers stay in the area for a season. Shorter rentals may be possible depending on availability, timing and the vehicle. Ask us and we'll tell you what is possible.

Can I use the car for everyday errands and work commuting?

Yes. That is exactly what the service is built for: work commutes, grocery trips, airport pickups, visiting nearby villages and shorter trips with friends.

How do I ask availability?

Use the Ask availability button or contact Kaltio Rent directly. Tell us when you need the car, how long you plan to stay, where you will mainly use the car and whether you need additional drivers, animal transport or cross-border permission.

02 / Cars & availability

What to expect from the cars and the availability request.

What kind of cars do you rent?

We rent practical utility cars for real northern use. They may be older and/or higher-mileage and are not promised to be new or nearly new. At handover, each vehicle is legally roadworthy, has a valid roadworthiness inspection and is suitable for ordinary road use. Normal age- or mileage-related wear, cosmetic defects, minor faults, sounds or comfort-feature shortcomings do not by themselves entitle the renter to a refund or cancellation if the vehicle remains safe, legal and suitable for ordinary use.

Are the cars premium rental cars?

No. The idea is different. Our cars are practical and affordable, while the experiences they make possible can feel premium. We focus on useful vehicles, clear terms and human local service rather than brand-new short-term tourist rental cars.

Is mileage limited?

No. The rental includes unlimited mileage. This does not override prohibited-use restrictions, the permitted area of use or other obligations in the rental agreement and terms.

03 / Drivers & area of use

Who may drive and where the car may be used.

Can more than one person drive the car?

Yes. Additional drivers must be agreed with and notified to Kaltio Rent in writing before they drive, and the additional-driver service is required. All drivers must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid category B driving licence and have sufficient driving skill for the conditions. The service costs €50 / rental period for 1 additional driver or €100 / rental period for 2–5 additional drivers. The renter remains responsible for the vehicle when an agreed additional driver uses it.

Can I drive outside Finland, for example to Norway?

The vehicle may be used in Finland without separate cross-border permission. Driving abroad always requires Kaltio Rent's prior written permission and a cross-border permit. The permit applies only to the countries specifically agreed and costs €50 / rental period. Driving abroad without permission is not allowed.

Is driving to Norway included in the normal rental price?

No. Norway, Sweden or any other foreign country is not automatically included in the normal rental price. Cross-border use must be agreed in writing before the trip, and the €50 / rental period permit applies only to the countries specifically agreed.

Can I take the car on longer road trips?

Yes, ordinary personal travel is allowed within the permitted area of use. For longer trips, especially in winter or outside Finland, contact Kaltio Rent in advance so the route and permissions are clear.

Northern conditions

Northern driving comes with northern conditions.

Winter weather, long distances and changing conditions are part of everyday driving in Lapland. A calm pace, clear planning and responsible everyday use help keep each journey practical.

04 / Winter, damage & responsibility

Using the car carefully in northern conditions.

Do I need to pre-heat the engine in winter?

Yes. Engine pre-heating is mandatory whenever the outside temperature is -10 °C or colder. Windows, lights and mirrors must be kept clear of snow and ice, and tyre condition and tyre pressure must be monitored in an ordinary way.

What happens if the car has a technical fault?

Faults, warning lights, unusual noises and other problems must be reported to Kaltio Rent without delay. If a technical fault attributable to Kaltio Rent makes the vehicle unusable, Kaltio Rent is responsible for investigating and repairing it. Rent is refunded for the unusable days, calculated from the monthly rent on a daily basis. A replacement vehicle is not guaranteed, and indirect customer costs such as taxis, accommodation or lost working time are not covered.

What should I do if there is damage or an accident?

Report damage, accidents, thefts, lost keys and other exceptional events to Kaltio Rent without delay. In traffic accidents, personal injury, animal damage, unclear liability or situations involving another party, the police must be contacted according to the rental terms and the situation.

What is my liability if something happens to the car?

There is no universal fixed deductible or liability amount. Liability for the vehicle itself and its vehicle parts is limited to the vehicle-specific maximum liability amount stated on the front page of the individual rental agreement, per incident. Insurance-covered damage may have a separate vehicle-specific customer responsibility amount stated in the agreement. Fuel, cleaning, late return, keys, accessories, fines, parking charges, road tolls and similar items are separate charges and are not automatically covered by that maximum liability.

Can I smoke in the car?

No. Smoking in the vehicle is always prohibited. The minimum charge is €250 plus actual and reasonable additional costs.

Can I transport animals in the car?

Only if this has been agreed in writing as an additional service. Animal transport costs €50 / rental period. Transport without agreed permission has a minimum charge of €250 plus actual and reasonable additional costs. The renter remains responsible for damage or unusual cleaning costs caused by animals.

05 / Payments, changes & returning the car

What happens around payment, plan changes and return.

When do I pay the rent?

Rent is paid monthly in advance. The first month's rent must be paid before the vehicle is handed over. Later payments follow the monthly due date agreed in the rental agreement.

How should I return the car?

The car must be returned on the agreed date, at the agreed time and according to Kaltio Rent's return instructions. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, it must have a full fuel tank, be cleaned in an ordinary manner and include all keys and accessories. Missing fuel is charged at €3 / litre plus a €50 refuelling charge. Where necessary, refuelling-related work costs €80 / hour and mileage compensation is €1.10 / km. Special cleaning is charged at actual and reasonable cost, with a minimum of €250 when special cleaning is required.

What happens if I return the car late?

Late return is charged at €80 for each started day, plus actual and reasonable recovery, transfer, investigation and collection costs where applicable. If you need more time, an extension must be agreed in writing before the agreed end date.

Can I cancel or end the rental early?

Before handover, written cancellation at least 7 days before the agreed handover means paid rent is refunded. If cancellation is made less than 7 days before handover, Kaltio Rent may retain up to an amount equal to one month's rent for reservation, preparation and lost-rental costs. After the rental begins, the agreement is fixed-term but may be terminated with one month's written notice. Rent remains payable during the notice period, and returning the car earlier does not create a refund for rent already paid for that period.

Still unsure?

Still unsure about something?

Ask before the agreement. We would rather clarify the details beforehand than leave anything unclear.
