01 / Why Ivalo
More useful than it looks.
Ivalo is the practical centre of everyday northern life, but it is more than a place for errands. The village has its own river, local food, local sport and roads that open toward very different parts of Lapland.

Everyday base
Groceries, pharmacy, fuel, supplies and the practical things you eventually need during a longer stay — Ivalo is where many of those everyday errands are easiest to sort out.

The airport
Ivalo Airport is only a few kilometres from the village, making airport runs, picking up friends and the beginning or end of a trip straightforward when you have a car.

The golden river
Ivalojoki runs straight through the village and carries part of Ivalo's gold-rush history with it. In winter it becomes part of the frozen northern landscape; in summer its sandy riverbanks show a completely different side of the village.

A road north — or east
Ivalo is a useful starting point for Saariselkä, Inari and quieter roads toward places such as Nellim.

It doesn't always need to be a big trip.

The practical run
Get the things you actually need.
Groceries, pharmacy, fuel or something you forgot when you arrived — Ivalo is the place where the practical parts of a season are easiest to sort out.

Pick someone up. Drop someone off. Keep moving.
With the airport only a few kilometres from the village, collecting a friend, starting a trip or getting someone to their flight is one of the most ordinary reasons to have a car here.

The local evening
Wings or hockey?
Some of Ivalo's better local experiences are very simple: food, a hockey game and an evening that feels more like local life than tourism.

Take the quieter road
Turn east towards Nellim.
When everyday Ivalo has done its job, the road toward Nellim changes the mood quickly — fewer services, more forest, Lake Inari and much quieter surroundings.

Remember Wednesday.
If you like wings, Pubi.fi is one of the local stops worth knowing. Wednesday is known for Wings Wednesday, built around an all-you-can-eat wing buffet. Check the current Wednesday deal before you go, as promotions and details can change.

Kultahippu is an easy central choice when you want a proper meal rather than a quick stop, with northern flavours alongside more familiar options.

Watch hockey like a local.
If TuKi are playing at home, go to Tunturiareena. TuKi, short for Tunturi-Kiekko, is Ivalo's local ice hockey club. This is not a polished tourist attraction — it is a real small-town northern hockey night, which is exactly why it is worth knowing about.

If we had an evening in Ivalo
Here's how we'd use it.
If TuKi are playing at home, start at Tunturiareena. If they are not — or when the game is over — head into the village for food.
On a Wednesday, we'd check the current Wings Wednesday deal at Pubi.fi.
Not every evening in Lapland needs to be a safari or a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sometimes a hockey game and wings are exactly what makes somewhere start to feel like home.
06 / The river
Ivalo has another side.
Leave a little time for the river. Ivalojoki runs straight through the village, carrying both the area's gold-rush history and a quieter side of everyday Ivalo.
In summer, look for the sandy riverbanks. In winter, the frozen river becomes part of the northern landscape in a completely different way.
07 / Take the quieter road
Nellim feels much farther away than it is.
When Ivalo feels too practical, drive east.
Nellim is a small wilderness village by Lake Inari where Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi and Finnish traditions meet. The road moves quickly away from everyday Ivalo into forests, lakes and much quieter surroundings.
Go when you want the drive itself to feel like part of the experience — especially on a clear winter day or evening.
