Drive north long enough and the landscape starts to feel different. Utsjoki sits between open fells and the River Teno, with Norway literally across the water and some of Finland’s most memorable roads continuing in both directions.

This far north, the landscape takes over.

The River Teno defines the landscape here. Roads follow the valley between Finland and Norway while the fells rise on both sides.

The road
Utsjoki is one of those destinations where arriving is part of the experience. Route 970 follows the Teno valley through some of the most distinctive road scenery in Finland.

The Ailigas fells
The Ailigas fells rise above the valley and give the area its open, unmistakably northern scale.

This is not empty wilderness. Utsjoki is part of the Sámi homeland and a living cultural landscape where people live, work and maintain local livelihoods.

Three stops worth knowing.

Stop 01
The parish huts
Stop before you reach the village.
This is the stop we wouldn’t drive past. The old parish huts by Lake Mantojärvi make Utsjoki’s history visible in a way that a road sign never will. Take a short detour, walk around and give the place time rather than treating it as a photo stop.
The historical parish village contains old church huts dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, beside the stone church completed in the 19th century.

Stop 02
The Sámi Bridge
Stand between two countries.
Walk out onto the bridge and look down the Teno valley. Norway is on the other side, Utsjoki behind you and the river below. It makes the geography of the place suddenly obvious.

Take the road north
Don’t turn around yet.
If you have the time, keep following the Teno toward Nuorgam. This is where Utsjoki turns from a destination into a road trip.

Restaurant Deatnu
For food that belongs to where you are: Deatnu. If you want dinner to be part of understanding Utsjoki rather than just refuelling yourself, this is one of the places we’d look at.

05 / If we had one day in Utsjoki
Here’s how we’d use it.
Don’t hurry through the first part of the day. Stop at the parish huts before the village and let the landscape change around you.
In Utsjoki, walk out toward the Sámi Bridge and look properly along the Teno valley. Eat before you continue.
Then make a decision: turn back — or keep driving Route 970 toward Nuorgam. If you have enough daylight and conditions are good, we’d keep going.
Utsjoki is better when the drive itself is allowed to be the plan.
06 / Keep following the Teno
Nuorgam is the natural next chapter.
If you have already driven this far, Nuorgam is hard to ignore.
Keep following the Teno until you reach Finland’s and the EU’s northernmost village. The landscape stays open, Norway remains across the river and the road itself keeps rewarding the extra kilometres.
You can also continue toward Finland’s and the EU’s northernmost point if conditions and time allow.

08 / Stay the night?
Give the return drive tomorrow.
If you continue toward Nuorgam, eat late or simply want more time along the Teno, staying overnight can turn a long day into a much better road trip.
You are not staying because Utsjoki has a huge nightlife scene. You are staying so that the road, the light and the landscape do not have to be rushed.
